The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) is considered one of the toughest and most prestigious competitive exams in India. 🔹 Origins During the British Era (1853–1947)


📜 1. The Beginning:


In 1853, the British East India Company introduced a competitive examination for recruitment into the Indian Civil Services (ICS).


This exam was initially conducted in London, and though technically open to Indians, very few could afford to travel or qualify due to lack of access to British education.



🌟 2. First Indian ICS Officer:


In 1864, Satyendranath Tagore, the elder brother of Rabindranath Tagore, became the first Indian to clear the ICS exam.


His success inspired other Indians to strive for administrative positions.

From 1922, the ICS exam began to be held in India (Allahabad and Delhi), making it somewhat more accessible to Indian candidates.


Still, the top posts remained mostly with the British until independence.

After independence, the Constitution of India (Articles 315–323) provided for the formation of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).


On January 26, 1950, UPSC was officially established to recruit civil servants for the Indian government.

The civil services were restructured to serve a democratic India, and new services were created, including:


Indian Administrative Service (IAS)


Indian Police Service (IPS)


Indian Foreign Service (IFS)
