The Beginning and History of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is one of the largest and most influential political parties in India today. Its roots are deeply embedded in the long and eventful history of Indian politics. Let’s explore how the BJP started, its history, and how it grew over the years.

When Was the BJP Founded?

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was officially founded on 6th April 1980.

Before BJP, there was a party called the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, established in 1951 by Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee. The Bharatiya Jana Sangh merged with several other parties in 1977 to form the Janata Party, which came to power after the Emergency period.

However, due to ideological differences within the Janata Party, the members who were associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) broke away. This led to the birth of the BJP on 6th April 1980.

Key Leaders During BJP’s Formation

Some of the key founding leaders of BJP were:

Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Lal Krishna Advani (L.K. Advani)

Murli Manohar Joshi

Kushabhau Thakre

BJP’s Ideology

The BJP’s ideology is based on Hindutva (Hindu Nationalism), Cultural Nationalism, and Integral Humanism. It draws its ideological inspiration from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

BJP’s Political Journey

The BJP started with humble beginnings:

In the 1984 General Elections, BJP won only 2 seats in the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Indian Parliament).

However, in the following years, BJP steadily gained popularity.

The BJP formed its first central government in 1996, though it lasted only 13 days.

Later, under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, BJP formed governments in 1998 and 1999, with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition.

From 1999 to 2004, Vajpayee served as Prime Minister for a full term.

In 2014, under Narendra Modi’s leadership, BJP won a historic majority and formed the government on its own.

In 2019, BJP repeated its success with an even bigger majority.

BJP’s Current Status (Till 2025)

As of 2025, the BJP remains a dominant political force in India. It holds power at the national level and in many state governments across the country. The party has a very strong organizational structure and millions of members.

Conclusion

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come a long way from its early days as the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, to becoming the most powerful political party in India today. Its journey reflects sig

nificant moments in Indian democracy and politics.
